Help! The Fabrics Ate My Shirt!

9/17/2015

Comments

Sometimes you wear a loose shirt that's not appropriate for fabric but you just want to run that at one trick real quick. Then your shirt gets caught and your friend lifts you up so you don't tear your shirt. Because THATS what friends are for. #aerialblooper #aerialfail #nailedit

A video posted by Felicia Coe (@iowaflygirl) on Aug 3, 2015 at 9:15pm PDT

Did you see my recent IG video of my fabric fight? I had a friend help me escape the trap to avoid damaging a (too loose) shirt that I managed to tangle in a fabric knot. #IKnowBetterThanToWearLooseClothesOnFabricDay

"One of the most frustrating moments in a class is when, after executing a lovely Plummeting Whore or Crap-tastic rolldown, the fabric eats your shirt.“Wretched fabric!” you shriek. “Why why WHY???!!!!”
Well, because you fed it.
Please Don’t Feed the Fabric

It’s a toughie, right? You want to put on a T-shirt with sleeves for armpit-catching drops, but you don’t want to wind up dangling by a knot on your back. What to do, what to do? Fear not, friend – you’ve got options.

How did you get into aerial?
I discovered aerial while traveling. Ladies would be hanging from the trees in parks, just doing their thing.  I found it fascinating!

What do you love about aerial?
I love how I feel after an aerial class... Full of energy!! There is something to be said about hanging upside down.
It also allows me to open up my body and be free!

Thoughts during and after class?

What do you love about aerial?
I love that it challenges my body and my brain. And I get hang out upside-down and flip around!! It's like gymnastics for grown-ups :)

What keeps you coming back?
Um, it's super fun. And challenging. And therapy.

And this sounds cheesy, but I love how supportive the community is. My classmates are excited for me when I nail a move and vice versa. It's not about competition or out-doing anyone, it's about encouragement and support. And that is really cool.

What were your thoughts during/after your first class?

A LONG time... Like 2.5 years.

What do you love about aerial?
Once in awhile there is something I can manage to do without throwing up, or looking like I’m about to die; that makes it worth it.

What is your favorite apparatus/class?
I have a really difficult time picking a favorite apparatus. Right now, I feel most comfortable on the hammock, but I really want to build my strength and endurance so that I can do more exciting stuff on the silks. My favorite class is definitely All Aerial, because I get to play on ALL THE THINGS.

What keeps you coming back?
The sense of personal accomplishment. I've been doing yoga and weight lifting for years, but aerial has given me the most visible and dramatic progress in terms of what my body can do. I am not naturally athletic; I basically didn't do any kind of exercise until I was halfway through my 20s. I couldn't even wrap my foot successfully for a climb when I started out, let alone haul myself up 20 feet in the air. It's kind of amazing in my mid-30s to be able to see myself getting stronger and more awesome every time I come to class.

Aerial Performance Attire

A few of my students are performing in our upcoming student showcase (TGR Fitness presents Elements) and some are competing in the AAFA Amateur Aerial Competition this summer and I have been getting a lot of questions about apparel/costuming from those performing aerial, so I thought I would share my tips with the them here.

1. COVERAGE!

Make sure you have adequate coverage based on your performance. Don’t have a bare midriff if you are doing a straddle back. It will not only be pretty unflattering in pictures, but it will also be pretty uncomfortable.

Don’t have bare armpits if you will be sliding upside down on the fabric using the friction from said armpits.

Ask me how I know this...
